Dear 3B,
it's the weekend!
I hope you enjoyed the science lesson about living and non-living things this week.
I saw many interesting questions being posted on our Science wall - thank you!
Do continue to keep those relevant curious thoughts alive...
Our question for the week was: What makes a living thing a living thing?
I can see that most of you have been reading your textbooks as many of you gave me standard answers such as - Living things grow, respond to changes, move, etc.
But how many of you actually truly understand the meaning of these terms such as characteristics, respond to changes etc?
Do remember the X in EXPLORE - Xpect to learn from others. So please do not be satisfied with just the answers you have ..do learn to listen to the views of others , who knows ? They may just widen your perspective!
So, gettting back on course...
Today, you watched a video that showed you pictures of different things that you were supposed to classify as living or non-living.
After the video we discussed the points that made you decide why a thing was living or non-living.
Here are your criteria (i.e. points that you considered before you classfied an object)
- Can they grow?
- Can they reproduce?
- Do they need food and water?
- Do they die?
- Do they breathe?
- Do they respond to changes?
- Can they move?
Student A says: Clouds can move, respond to changes (e.g. wind blows the clouds) and even grow(big clouds and small clouds). So, clouds are living things!
Student B says: Seeds grow, need water but they do not breathe and they cannot move. So seeds are non-living things!
What do YOU think?
Your assignment is to
1. Respond to the statements of Students A & B and
explain why you agree/disagree with them.
2. Share your thoughts on
"WHAT MAKES A LIVING THING A LIVING THING?"
Blog your responses in the comments box!
Note:
1. IDENTIFY yourself by keying in your name before sharing your views.
2. Practice positive online behaviour - do not spam(i.e. write irrelevant comments)
3. Comment, don't criticise others.
4. Your responses should not be just "I agree/disagree with A or B".
EXPLAIN WHY/HOW you decided if clouds and seeds were living things or not.
Share what you think makes a living thing a living thing.
Post your responses by next Wednesday (1st Feb, 2012). I look forward to reading your responses and having a fruitful discussion!
Have a good weekend!
Love,
Ms Priya :)
clouds can move, respond to changes and can grow buy clouds are non-living things.
ReplyDeleteseeds can grow, reproduce, die and respond to changes therefore, they are living things.
By Elrond
Hi Elrond,
Deletethank you for the clear reply. I would just like to know how you decided a cloud is a non-living thing - can you explain what makes a non-living thing?
A cloud is a non-living thing because it does not need to eat, it does not breathe and die. It has no heart beat too. It does not meet the characteristics of non-living thing.
DeleteClouds can move but cannot die so clouds are non living things.seeds can die, grow and need water so seeds are living things

DeleteFor question A, clouds are non-living things because cloud do not need food and water, clouds also need the wind to make it move and clouds cannot die.
ReplyDeleteFor question B, seeds need food, water and sunlight to grow. seeds can die when it is not fed or watered.
I am Lawrence. For question A,clouds are non-living things don't need food and water, they are made out of water droplets. For question B,seeds need food, water and sunlight, air to grow.(Of course, they are living things.)Seeds can die if it's not fed and watered.(A bit like Zen.)This is Lawrence signing out.
ReplyDeleteClouds are non-living things because 1. They don't need water and air 2. They don't reproduce 3. They don't die. A seed a seed is a living thing because 1. It will grow 2. It needs water and food 3. It will reproduce ( when it grows up )

ReplyDeleteclouds are non-living things as :
1. clouds cannot move.(only when the wind blows than the clouds move)
2.clouds do not need food, water, air,do not die and do not grow.
A seed is a living thing as :
1. seeds neds food( sunlight is the food to a plant)and water and it dies if you do not water it.
2. it responds to changes around it(wherever there is sunlight it will lean towards the sunlight) and it grows.
clouds are not living things because they do not need air and water, they do not need food, they do not respond to changes, they also do not reproduce.
ReplyDeleteA seed is a living thing because they need air and water, they also respond to changes.
Cars are non living things even though they can move because the fuel provide energy for the car and it dosent respond to changes.

ReplyDeleteclouds are non living things as they do not eat or respond to changes.
seeds are a living things as they will grow into plants and need to eat and drink.
Clouds are non-living Natural things. They do not have the living things characteristics: 1.Without air, food and water, clouds will not die. 2.Clouds can't reproduce and have young.
ReplyDeleteYes, seeds are living thing when they get favourable conditions like food, minerals ,water, sunlight and oxygen to grow.
By: Nicole Ng
I agree that clouds are non living thing as it do not need air, food and water to live or grow.
DeleteFor seeds, i agree it is a living thing because when you water it daily and give it sufficient sunlight and oxygen it will grow into a healty plant.
By:Xander Ang
I do not agree with Student A. It is due to the wind that clouds move and respond to changes. Clouds grow because of increase in water content. Clouds do not reproduce, die, breathe or need food and water.
ReplyDeleteI also do not agree with Student B. Seeds are living things because they can grow, need water, could die and respond to changes (e.g. temperature) too.
I am sorry that I haven't finsh my earlier sentence.
ReplyDelete(I disagree with student A and student B.)
From Lawrence Lim Zi Yang.
I disagree both student A and student B because clouds move due to the wind and the clouds "grow" due to the water vaper. student B is also wrong because although the thing about seeds don't breathe is correct, a seed is a living thing because the seed need air, food, and water. the seed is not fully grown so it doesn't breathe.
ReplyDeleteFrom Amanda Toh
i half agree, half disagree with student A and
ReplyDeletestudent B.i half agree, half disagree with student a because clouds don't move by itself.the wind blows it to move.the wind blows does not help the clouds respond to changes but clouds i believe it is still a living thing even though it doesn't need air, food and water.
also,i half agree and half disagree because seeds do indeed grow and do not breathe but it is still a living thing because it needs water to grow.even through it hasn't grown,it is still a living thing.
my share for what is a living thing makes it a living thing is it has a life,a heartbeat, organs parts,it can grow and other things that a living thing can do.
i have finished all the stuff you wanted....thank you.hope you will like my answers.
i am i in the picture you posted?ms priya?
ReplyDeleteJoanne Loh
ReplyDeleteI disagree with student B because seeds grow and do not breathe but it is still a living thing. It is because it still needs water to live.

i disagree with student B because seeds need water to grow.to:miss priya
ReplyDeleteYap Yu Lun
ReplyDeleteI disagree with both students, because cloud can't reproduce and does not need food to grow. Seeds need water, air, sunlight and soil (food) to grow. And plants (grown from seeds) can reproduce more seeds when matured.
I do not agree with both student A and student B.
ReplyDeleteA. Clouds are non-living things because:
1. Clouds cannot reproduce. Clouds are formed when lots and lots of water vapor come together and condense into tiny water droplets. Clouds grow bigger only when more water droplets come together.
2. Clouds do not move by themselves. Clouds move with the wind.
3. Clouds do not need water and food. Clouds do not breathe or die.
B. Seeds are living things because:
1. Seeds will grow into plants.
2. Seeds need water, air and food to grow and they will die when none of those are present.
3. As seeds grow, their growth will respond to changes such as the direction of the sunllight and the surrounding temperature.
I disagree with student A and student B. Clouds cannot move by itself and respond to changes. Seeds need air, food and water in order to survive, without them, the seed would not grow.
ReplyDeleteCLoud is a non living thing because,
ReplyDeleteA. It does not need air, food and water
B.It does not move by itself . The wind causes the cloud to move.
C.It does not reproduce, grow and die.
Seed is a living thing because ,
A. It can grow into a plant.
B.It needs air and water to survive.
C.It can die.
Shay Tang
I disagree with student A and B.
ReplyDeleteClouds are non-living things as they do not eat or drink and do not respond to changes.
Seeds are living things as it needs food, water, grows to a plant and dies.
I'm not really agree what student A said because,
ReplyDelete1.Clouds do not need thing to life
2.It do not move be itself
3.It do grow or die
I do not agree what student B said because,
1.Seeds will die
2.It needs water and air to survive
Ong Zhen Ying
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with student A because the cloud does not need water, air and food to live.
I disagree with student B as the seeding will grow into a tree, All living things will die. It needs water, air and food to live.
Cloud is not a living thing , because they do not grow, they do not reproduce, they do not need food and water, they do not die , they do not breath, they do not respond to changes and they do not move
ReplyDeleteby themselves. They are moved by the wind.
Seed is a living thing, because they can grow, they can reproduce, they need food, water and sunlight. They die when they do not have enough food, water and sunlight. Seed do not breath, they do not response to changes and they do not move. I disagree with Student A because they do not response to changes.
Jasmine Tan
I disagree with student A because clouds do not need water, air, food and they do not die.I disagree with student B beacuse seeds do grow when they have water. And they die when they do not have enough water.Seeds also need air.
ReplyDeleteDaniel Loh
Cloud is a non-living thing because they do not grow,do not reproduce,do not need food and water, do not die,do not breathe. do not respond to changes and do not move by themselves.
ReplyDeleteSeed is a living thing because they can grow, can reproduce need food and water, they die, they breathe but do not respond to changes and move by themselves.
wheres the scrip?
ReplyDeleteI am very happy to see you in 3B.I hope you will be my teacher in primary 5 and 6.Now,I have read your question and I disagree student A and B.Clouds cannot reproduce and they do not need water, air and food,so they are non-living things.Seeds need water. All living things need water,so they are living things
ReplyDeleteFrom:Ng Liang Pin
FROM:NG LIANG PIN
I disagree with Student A because when conditions are favourable, with water and sunlight, seed will grow, a seed is the beggining of a lifecyle of a plant and will make it's own food.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Student B because although clouds can move and will grow, but they are just gathering of water vapour. It is unable to get rid of waste products from it's body,it does not breathe or die. Therefore, clouds are non-living things.

DeleteHi Ms Priya, I've found the News opening music but I don't know how to post it.
ReplyDeleteHi,kian Ann,thanks for finding the news sound.or else we might still need to find the news sound.we still need to do the ppt screens and Some more sounds thanks for your help!i appreciate it.the thing I owe you is,I wish you to have a good act in your role for rainbow day. :)

ReplyDeleteI disagree with question A
Clouds do not need food, water and air,it does not breath.
I disagree with question B
Seed needs certain conditions to grow eg, water food and air. Without these conditions,it is basically a non living thing.
Cloud is a non-living as it
ReplyDelete- does not need air, food and water
- cannot reproduce
- cannot die
- cannot grow
- cannot response to changes
Alicia Cheng
A cloud is not a living thing as it cannot die and reproduce. A seed is a living thing as it can grow.

ReplyDeleteI disagree with both A and B.Clouds move with the help of the wind.It grows bigger as it collects the water vapours so clouds are non-living things.Seeds grow bigger with the help of air, sunlight and water and all living things needs most of those so seeds are living things.
from wen xuan
Yaxuan:I do not agree that student A is correct as I think clouds do not move but just being blown about by the wind.I also think that student B is also incorrect as plants also breathe. Plants may not be able to move but their roots move down towards the ground.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with student A.The cloud is moving by the wind.I also do not agree with student B.The plant also breathe with their root.
ReplyDeleteI am Jen Ning. A living thing can grow, reproduce and is alive.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with A because clouds cannot move by its own and it is not a living thing.
I disagree with B because seeds from the plants can grow into new plants. They can reproduce and so it is a living thing.
