Science Assignment : Living ? Non-Living?

Dear 3B,

it's the weekend!

I hope you enjoyed the science lesson about living and non-living things this week.

I saw many interesting questions being posted on our Science wall - thank you!

Do continue to keep those relevant curious thoughts alive...

Our question for the week was: What makes a living thing a living thing?

I can see that most of you have been reading your textbooks as many of you gave me standard answers such as - Living things grow, respond to changes, move, etc.

But how many of you actually truly understand the meaning of these terms such as characteristics, respond to changes etc?

Do remember the X in EXPLORE - Xpect to learn from others. So please do not be satisfied with just the answers you have ..do learn to listen to the views of others , who knows ? They may just widen your perspective!

So, gettting back on course...

Today, you watched a video that showed you pictures of different things that you were supposed to classify as living or non-living.
After the video we discussed the points that made you decide why a thing was living or non-living.

Here are your criteria (i.e. points that you considered before you classfied an object)

  • Can they grow?

  • Can they reproduce?

  • Do they need food and water?

  • Do they die?

  • Do they breathe?

  • Do they respond to changes?

  • Can they move?
Our class had mixed views as to whether clouds & seeds are living things or not... So, let's discuss them!

Student A says: Clouds can move, respond to changes (e.g. wind blows the clouds) and even grow(big clouds and small clouds). So, clouds are living things!

Student B says: Seeds grow, need water but they do not breathe and they cannot move. So seeds are non-living things!

What do YOU think?

Your assignment is to
1. Respond to the statements of Students A & B and
explain why you agree/disagree with them.

2. Share your thoughts on
"WHAT MAKES A LIVING THING A LIVING THING?"

Blog your responses in the comments box!

Note:
1. IDENTIFY yourself by keying in your name before sharing your views.

2. Practice positive online behaviour - do not spam(i.e. write irrelevant comments)

3. Comment, don't criticise others.

4. Your responses should not be just "I agree/disagree with A or B".
EXPLAIN WHY/HOW you decided if clouds and seeds were living things or not.
Share what you think makes a living thing a living thing.

Post your responses by next Wednesday (1st Feb, 2012). I look forward to reading your responses and having a fruitful discussion!

Have a good weekend!

Love,
Ms Priya :)

It looks like a promising year ahead!

Dear pupils and parents,
Once again, I would like to warmly welcome you to our new 3B family! The first week of Term 1 kept us all rather busy with various housekeeping matters as well as the setting up of our classroom. The pictures of our classroom will be uploaded here next week, so stay tuned!

Here are some things we have accomplished this week:

  • established our class expectations (code of conduct),

  • set up our bulletin boards, reading corner and class layout together

  • read our first Big Book of the term (A Kitten For A King)

  • learnt about an online dictionary and how to read a dictionary entry (Oxford Dictionaries)

  • formed our groups and thought of group names

  • served as Buddy Leaders to help our P1s during recess

As you can see, it has been an eventful week and I'm proud of our 3B explorers who have taken all this into their stride very well. My dear 3B, I hope you have enjoyed your first week of school...

From next week onwards, we will be heading full swing into lessons, so be prepared for an exciting learning journey ahead!

Have a great weekend!

Ms Priya :)
